In this essay, I would like to reveal and outline my position on the following topics, which in my opinion are important in today's society, and they are modern language education, teaching technology, multilingualism, and artificial languages.
In modern Russian methodological science, the term "language education" is used more and more often.
According to A.V. Kozyrev language, education should be understood as a process and result of cognitive activity aimed at mastering language and speech, self-development and formation of personality.
I believe that the possession of a body of knowledge about language is necessary for full and effective speech activity.
As well as the ability to perceive texts and construct their own speech works in oral and written form.
The pronounced need of society for quality language education is supported at the state level. In accordance with the educational policy in secondary school foreign language as a subject is proposed to study from the 2nd grade.
Language education, especially if it includes two or more languages can help a child, a future student to navigate freely in the modern multilingual space.
The state and public value of language education must be reinforced by its person-centered value. After all, everything depends not only on opportunities, but also on desire.
Linguistic diversity and multiculturalism are now seen as one of the most valuable elements of the global European and all-Russian cultural heritage and as a philosophy of intercultural social interaction in any multicultural and multilingual society.
Modern learning technologies contribute to the solution of this problem. In the practice of teaching foreign languages at the present stage of education, the following technologies are used:
- Learning in cooperative groups;
- Discussions;
- brainstorming sessions;
- role-playing games with a problem orientation;
- Case-study method;
- Project method;
- The "student's portfolio";
- Information technologies.
The ability to conduct a discussion, to defend your point of view supported by arguments, to express your idea succinctly, the ability to listen and hear your opponent are important skills for the formation of communicative and socio-cultural competence.
There is a famous phrase: "How many languages you know, how many times you are human. Related to it is the idea of linguistic relativity. It is because people who speak different languages think differently, and language determines human thinking. A classic example: the language of the North American Hopi Indians, which was studied by Benjamin Lee Whorf. According to his descriptions, the Hopi Indians do not perceive time as a sequence of temporal objects, which is somehow adhered to in the languages of the Central European standard (English, French, etc.). In Hopi language, time is denoted by special words "suddenly," "long ago." Hopi has a message of expected and actual events, general statements, while Europeans are used to a grammatical division into past, present, and future. We have spatial metaphors ("there are interesting things ahead of us," "he has a lot of experience behind him"), the Hopi language does not.
Multilingualism is quite expensive. For example, it concerns the installation of road signs in several languages in the same country. One of the disadvantages of multilingualism is that having different languages puts people in an unequal position. Some people are given prestigious languages at birth while others have to learn them.
An important "pro" argument is that language proficiency provides a cognitive advantage. Early bilingualism affects attention control. Bilinguals develop Alzheimer's disease later in life. Language opens up new ways of thinking in terms of color orientation and working memory.
The question of artificial languages is another matter. The first artificial language was invented back in the 12th century, and with the advent of telephone communication, the fashion for linguistic systems designed to unite nations began. Now the number of artificial languages, not counting amateur projects, is close to a hundred.
The reasons for creating an artificial language are to facilitate human communication (international auxiliary languages, codes), to give fiction extra realism, linguistic experiments, to provide communication in a fictional world, language games and entertainment.
This mainly includes the so-called planned languages that people have created to facilitate international communication. They are usually created based on natural languages, combining similar vocabulary and simplifying grammar. By design, such languages should be understandable to a large number of people even without learning, and learning the language should be quick and easy.
In conclusion, learning one or more languages certainly has a positive effect on your mental development and new avenues in life. However, which language you learn depends on your ability, desire and predisposition.
